About Myself

Jane Gilbert

Founder of Carbon Clarity

I’m Dr Jane Gilbert, founder of Carbon Clarity, an independent consultancy dedicated to helping organisations develop sustainable, circular solutions to today’s most pressing environmental challenges. With over 30 years of experience in the waste and resources sector, I’ve built a career at the intersection of science, policy, and practical implementation—working globally to advance more resilient, sustainable systems.

My academic background includes a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology, a PhD in Biochemistry, and an MBA, providing a strong foundation in both scientific analysis and strategic thinking. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Wastes and Resources Management (FCIWM), a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), and an ISWA International Waste Manager. I also serve on the British Standards Institution’s panel for packaging biodegradability, helping to shape standards that support environmental goals.

Throughout my career, I’ve played a leading role in the development of organic waste treatment, composting and bio-waste recycling across Europe and beyond. I co-founded the European Compost Network and currently serve as Vice-Chair of the International Solid Waste Association’s Scientific and Technical Committee. Since founding Carbon Clarity in 2009, I’ve supported projects funded by the World Bank, UNEP, UNIDO, UNOPS and national governments, delivering expert advice and authored guidance on topics ranging from single-use plastics and agricultural packaging to food waste prevention and soil health.

Recent highlights include serving as principal author of the UNIDO (2025) report on plastics standards in Egypt, contributing to the UNEP (2024) guide on composting in West Asia, and co-authoring the ISWA (2023) practitioner’s guide to managing contaminants in organic waste. I also co-edited The Composting Handbook (Elsevier, 2022), and authored The Composting Troubleshooter—a practical book blending science with accessible advice for home and community composters.

My consultancy work is rooted in systems thinking—recognising the interconnectedness of environmental, social and economic factors. Whether supporting national strategy development, advising on standards, or analysing policy gaps, I aim to deliver outcomes that are scientifically grounded, contextually relevant and future-ready.
